that is worn by the women of Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Austria, South Tyrol, and of course, Bavaria. Inspired by
the Alpine peasant look, the dirndl has four main parts to it. Start with the blouse, then you have a bodice that
goes over it for the top. The lower half consists of a full skirt topped with an apron. Although this ensemble may
seem rather simple, looks can be deceiving. The modern ones made can cost you a pretty penny as it is exquisitely
tailored from either silk or hand printed materials and fabrics.
For a bit of history, this costume actually originated as the uniform of Austrian servants somewhere in the 19th
century. The word dirndl, when added the “gewand” to the end, dirndlgewand, actually means maid’s dress. Other
forms of this look, but in a much simpler fashion, were also worn by other kinds of working women. It was only
until the 1870s that the upper class and the so called elite society of Austria adopted the dirndl as high
fashion.

has the four main parts, the bodice, the blouse, the skirt, and the apron but tweaked in a way that gives it a
