50's Sock Hop Costume - Going To The Sock Hop Tonight ?

For the teenage girl of the 1950’s, if she was not dressed in her car hop costume to earn a bit of pocket money, she would be planning her social life with her pals. And one popular social occasion was the school dance or sock hop. This 50s Sock Hop Costume is inspired by the dances but has a slightly updated, modern look to it.

The sock hop was another name for a school dance during the 1950’s. It was usually organized by the teachers and parents in the school gymnasium or sports arena as this was the best place to hold a large group of people. However because the participants didn’t want to damage the flooring, that was more used to sneakers, they were asked to take their shoes off and dance in their socks. Hence the name sock hop came about.

It’s a terribly innocent look by today’s standards and that is part of the charm of 50’s costumes. They hark back to an age that we feel we know and that won’t change.

Having said this, this costume is certainly not the type of costume that a 1950’s teenage girl would wear to a school dance. It would be far too risque in those days and has a number of modern touches to it. For instance the hemline of the skirt is far too short. The hemline of this skirt is above the knee whereas typical skirts of the period for a teenage girl would have a hemline closer to the ankle. However this type of skirt is quite normal now and even a bit conservative or nostalgic looking by today's standards.

In fact, looking at the picture, the whole outfit is quite provocative by 1950’s standards. This girls looks more like a rock n roll chick I would say. Even the top is quite daring by 1950’s standards. Again, most people by today’s standards would think it was a cute and normal outfit.

So lets describe what you actually get in this costume. The most ironic aspect of this sock hop costume is that there are no socks with it ! Or shoes for that matter. You’ll have to get you’re own socks and shoes.

Other than that, you get a one piece dress that looks like a separate skirt and top.

The top is a perfect pink color with short sleeves and a eye catching low-neck double lapel collar. You also get a sassy polka dot scarf as an accessorie to the top.

The skirt part of the dress is a black  with pink polka dots. There are also music note appliqué on the skirt which is knee length. The skirt is based on the longer poodle style skirts that teenage girls might have worn to a sock hop or just generally.

The finishing touch to this outfit is an attached belt with a faux rhinestone buckle that gives the look of a two piece costume.

The pink and black contrast really makes the costume stand out. You are sure to get noticed at the Halloween party dressed in the 50s Sock Hop Costume.
